South Dakota Unit bids Farewell

It has been five months since our Memorial Day Rally in Rapid City. It was an enjoyable time. It was a sad time. Present for the event were Bob & Ginger Collier, Bruce & Carolyn Coonrod, John & Sandi DeYoung, Kemm Satterfield & Myrtle Letcher. Our business meeting was held on Saturday, May 23 at the Lake Park Campground, following our potluck evening meal next to the Collier’s trailer. President Myrtle called the meeting to order at 6:10 p.m. with the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Minutes of our September 29, 2008 meeting and the current
treasurer’s report were read and approved. Other business- the message board for International, delegates, Constitutional amendments, expenses for breakfast and postage-were discussed, decisions made. The Ultimate Decision was left till last. As Secretary Sandi’s minutes state:

“After much discussion and motion duly made and passed, it was decided that due to few members and no one willing to become officers of our unit, that our unit will disband. No further rallies will be held. The money remaining in the treasury will be divided between the food pantries at Rapid City and Pierre. This will be completed by August 1, 2009. The Coonrod’s will have possession of the scrapbooks.”

UPDATE: Thanks to Murt misplacing a check and never finding it, the SD Unit bank account still has not been closed. Kemm will write and mail the checks to the food pantries as soon as the re-issued check has cleared the bank account. This will occur before December 31, 2009.

It was decided that our Unit Flag and the President’s flag would be donated to the WBCCI Archives in Jackson Center, OH. Coffee pots, 5-gallon beverage cooler, table cloths, etc. were appropriately divided or donated to charity. Murt will take any memorabilia pertaining to our WBCCI Unit to sell at the WBCCI International Rally flea market to be held on July 4. (Flea market proceeds, $82.75, were turned over to Treasurer Kemm when Murt returned home in July. The very few song books and the printed emblems & buttons not sold were given to
Kemm to dispose of .)  Business meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

Memorial Day Rally on the Horizon

The rally schedule is still being formalized, but expect a busy Memorial Day weekend is being planned for our annual Spring Rally at the Lake Park Campground in Rapid City, May 21-25.  Friday morning will start off with our annual business meeting followed by an early lunch.  After lunch we will have a tour of a recycling facility and an evening of catching up with friends after a long winter.  Saturday morning, Bob Collier will be Master Tour Leader, leading us on an all-day Mystery Drive/Tour/Eating-Out day which will include a tour of the mine where he works.  Expect a slight change over past rallies, with breakfasts on your own.  If you haven’t made your reservation yet, call the Lake Park Campground at 800-644-2267 and make sure you mention you are with the Wally Byam Airstream group to get the discounted rates.  For directions to the Park and to visit their website, click http://www.lakeparkcampground.com/map.htm

One other item to mention – keep your thoughts with President Murt as she makes her way through cataract surgeries last week and this coming week.  Please e-mail or call her to see what you can do to lighten her load these next few weeks.

Report from 2009 Mardi Gras Rally

It seems we’ve been in New Orleans for weeks, but it’s only been one week. Mardi Gras ended at midnight last night, but I was down long before that.  Most rallies are good, but this rally has been exceptional. Busy, busy, busy. Among other activities, we saw 10 parades, the last three Tuesday–Zulu and Rex. We had reserved grandstand seats across the street from the MC–the mayor himself, Nagin. What seemed normal yesterday–silly costumes, masks, crazy hats, beads–now would be considered wierd. We have bags and bags of throws, most of them beads.  We’re headed north to a casino campground, then back south to a state park where some sort of party will be going on March 6-7. Then it’s on to the Cajun caravan, which everyone says is great.Today we stayed here at the campsite at the University of New Orleans but need to be out tomorrow for a Robin Williams event. We drove over to the Lower 9th Ward and St. Bernard Parish to see the flood damage. St. Bernard Parish has lots of nice homes, many still abondoned. We also visited the site of Jackson’s victory over the British in the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans was actually Jan. 8, 1815, and for 40 years was celebrated as much as the Fourth of July.  –Bruce–

South Dakota members featured in Texas newspaper article on RVing

Bruce and Carolyn Coonrod from Pierre made their escape from the cold white north to the southern parts of Texas.  The Port Aransas South Jetty featured an article on the lifestyles of people who spend time in their recreational vehicles.  The reporter caught up with the Coonrods and included their Airstream with the other RVs in the article.

Sad news about a dear friend

rohrer.jpgrohrer.jpgrohrer.jpg        rohrer2.jpg              It is with a heavy heart that we let you all know that long time member of the South Dakota Unit, Herb Rohrer passed away on Monday, December 8, 2008.   Herb and Shirley, #16458, joined WBCCI in 1984.   Herb was president of the South Dakota unit in 1988 and again in 2000.  They were both very active in the set up and activities for the 2007 Region 7 Rally held in their home town on Huron, South Dakota.  Herb was active in Lions, and was dedicated to the annual Pancake Jamboree.” Herb loved to cook pancakes at our rallies, but had to have a certain brand, Krusteaz.  The funeral will be Friday Dec. 12 at the American Lutheran Church on 4th Street in Huron.  Please keep Shirley and her family in your thoughts and prayers as we join our families for the holidays and into the coming new year.rohrer.jpgrohrer.jpgrohrer.jpgrohrer.jpg

Folklorama 2009! Region 7 Rally site chosen

Region 7 President Don Rogers announced today that the 2009 Region 7 Rally will be held in Winnipeg August 4 - 9th, in conjunction with the city’s Folklorama Folk Arts Festival.  We had a great time there in 2004 and this one will be even better.  We will be staying at the Travelers’ RV Resort on the city’s southeast corner, with full hookups.  It is also expected that there will be two evenings with motorcoach service to the various pavilions, as well as daytime activities to keep us busy.  Start saving your morning coffee money now, because this rally is worth every penny!  As was the case last time, a number of people chose to stay on for the second week of the festival, and this will also be available.  More details will be forthcoming in the winter months.
